Back to School, Back to Confidence: Why Girls Need More Than a New Backpack
The first day of school brings a mix of excitement and nerves. New classrooms. New teachers. New routines. New friendships. For many girls, it can also bring a whole new set of questions:
Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Am I good enough? What if I make a mistake?
At Girls on the Run Worcester County, we believe the start of a new school year is the perfect time to remind girls that they don't have to have everything figured out. They just need to know that they are capable of taking the next step.
More Than Running
Girls on the Run is so much more than running.
Through our 8-week program, girls in grades 3–8 build confidence, strengthen friendships, learn how to navigate challenges, and develop skills they can carry with them long after the season ends. Running and movement are the vehicle, but the real finish line is helping girls recognize their own strength.
Our coaches create a space where girls can be themselves, try new things, make mistakes, cheer one another on, and discover that they are capable of more than they may have thought.
And honestly? Those are some pretty important skills for the school year.
Five Things We Want Every Girl to Know This School Year
1. You don't have to be perfect.
Making mistakes doesn't mean you failed. It means you're learning. Give yourself the same grace you give your friends.
2. Your voice matters.
Speak up. Ask questions. Share your ideas. You deserve to be heard.
3. Find your people.
The right friends won't make you feel like you need to change who you are. Look for the people who celebrate you, include you, and cheer you on.
4. Hard things get easier when you don't do them alone.
Whether it's a tough assignment, a new activity, or a challenging day, asking for help is a strength—not a weakness.
5. You are already enough.
Your worth isn't determined by your grades, your appearance, your athletic ability, or how many friends you have. You don't have to earn your value. You already have it.
A New School Year Is a New Starting Line
We love the idea of a starting line; not because everyone begins in the same place, but because every starting line is an invitation to take that first step.
Maybe this year a girl will raise her hand for the first time.
Maybe she'll invite someone new to sit with her at lunch.
Maybe she'll try out for a team.
Maybe she'll speak up when something doesn't feel right.
Maybe she'll realize she is stronger than she thought.
Those moments matter.
At Girls on the Run Worcester County, we're here to help girls build the confidence, connections, and skills to take on those moments and to remind them that they never have to run alone.
Here's to a new school year.
New beginnings. New friendships. New challenges. New confidence.
And a whole lot of girls discovering just how far they can go. 💗🏃♀️
